TEST DIVE #2

≡U.R.S.U.L.A. NAVIGATION
TEST DIVE MEME

For information about the animals and locations, be sure to check out the BIOME and BASE pages!

A: There’s a Storm on the Horizon
A brainstorm. On advice about the ingenuity of multi person parties, and from admitted lack of understanding of many needs of organics, URSULA has selected you and a partner (or partners) to go to one of the observatories with food, beds, and recording devices to have a jam session for ideas about missions.

You are not to leave the room until you have some good ones. So get cracking! Start suggesting to one another what the base needs to do.

Or get horribly, horribly sidetracked and possibly a little crazy at being locked up together with the ocean staring at you. Judging.

B: The Abysmal Sea
You’re stranded.

One of the planet’s troublesome signal-interfering pulses has just made your communication devices 100% nonfunctional. No matter how you try to call URSULA for help, she isn’t able to respond. The database strapped to your wrist is just a useless chunk of metal now, leaving you without a useful library of knowledge to survive off. If you were driving any underwater vehicle prior to this point, it’s broken down. And unless you’re a mechanic, it’ll be pretty hard to get it jumpstarted again.

Don’t fret! The communication systems always come online eventually, so if you stay put, it’ll boot back up and give you directions straight back to base so you can finally get home. But can you really afford to stay put? The sunlight’s slowly streaming out of the sky, leaving the waters darker and darker with each passing second. Soon, you won’t be able to see five feet in front of you, and the only warning you’ll get of any approaching threat is through sound, if they even make any.

You have a few choices: take a daring risk and try swimming back to base, but on the off-chance you don’t remember the directions correctly from before you were cut off, you’re going to get even more lost, in the darkness of the night no less. Or, you could huddle in, with any friends if they were unfortunate enough to be with you, and start focusing on getting warm. Because spending the night out here in the vast oceans with the entire world against you is becoming a very, very real possibility.

C: It’s dangerous to go alone. Take them!
URSULA’s technology is breathtaking. With enough materials, she could make practically anything: weapons, vehicles, all those human comforts and entertainments she forgot to build... or perhaps she could expand the base to give everyone even more leg room. But there’s a catch: you need to get those materials to her in the first place, and scavenging can be a monumental task.

The planet Iniidae has a plethora of materials to provide, but you’ve got to go find them first. Some are easy enough to get, by plucking off the ground or breaking a rock. But some are a bit more challenging, such as Crash Powder, seeing that the Crash defending it will literally explode in your face if you get too close. And then there’s materials such as Blood Oil, only harvestable within the Blood Kelp Caves several hundred meters underwater in the pitch-black darkness… remember, you have to gather resources with your two bare hands. No such thing as driving around and conveniently collecting them within the somewhat-relative safety of an armored vehicle.

Since it’s so dangerous to go alone, URSULA will encourage you all to leave the base in pairs or groups if you’re going to try collecting some of the more precarious materials to harvest. She has heard that most lifeforms find being reconstituted from nanites traumatic, so try not to die in front of each other!

D: Almost, but not quite, Entirely Unlike Tea
The droids, URSULA promises, will do their best to make anything you want. Go on! Ask them anything! She’s excited. This seems like a great way to test out their capacities.

Of course, you need to be very careful what you wish for. Maybe you ask for Hamlet by William Shakespeare, and they do their best but only know so much, giving you a book with some… creative changes. Maybe you ask for a puzzle box, but you weren’t specific enough and things went awry.

Maybe you made the mistake of asking for tea..

No matter what, you were given something that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike what you asked for. Now what do you do with it?

E: CREATURE FEATURES (possible body horror)
As more data is collected on the creatures of the deep, DNA can also be gathered to allow URSULA to research how to integrate it into her crew members in useful and hopefully unintrusive ways, unless of course permission is given first for more obvious or exhausting additions.

Well, that's the idea, anyway.

Unfortunately, something malfunctioned while URSULA was researching. Her incomplete serum was injected into you through your devices while you slept (or maybe you were knocked unconscious by the sudden change to your body). Now maybe you have the temperament of a Stalker or the thirst of a Bleeder or Gasopod pods on your back that trigger when you're startled. How this genetic malfunction works and what it is can be up to you but while URSULA assures you it's only temporary, you're stuck like this for now.

Have fun?

F: The Caverns of Dream
The ocean calls you. Of course, it's much easier to dismiss it as nightmares. You'll probably think that's all it is after you have them. Flashes of screaming sea creatures writhing in agony, pleading for help, but these creatures can't ask for help, can they? Something huge, beyond the scope of imagination, moves in the ocean of your dreams and calls out to you to go deeper into the darkness. It pleads and begs but not with a voice you can hear or words you can understand.

You wake up in a sweat with the unrelenting desire to take a swim, even though it's late and everyone is asleep. Or maybe someone else just had the same nightmare as you? Are you willing to take a swim and try to understand the dream?

Don't.

[ She didn't reach out to grab him. Having Bleeder suckers on the palms of her hands made that a stupid idea. Her voice was firm enough to make up for it.

Clenching her palms, she fought down the urge to stab through his sleeve and suck the blood out of him. It was annoyingly strong.
]

I assume you've seen what those do in the wild.

SORRY FOR THE MISTAKE HHH I shoudln't be tagging while hafl asleep

[ He takes a few seconds to look up from his own arm, expression unreadable but focused. ]

I have. If I extract them unpunctured, we can dispose of them safely.

[ Sanson notes the suckers on her hands, but says nothing. So it's not just a singular thing. ]

Don't worry about it!

And of course, here, in a common area, is the best place to do that. [ Valentine didn't know his skill level and she didn't particularly care at this point. The stupidity of cutting into oneself when in a shared area while other options were available offended her to her very base nature. Quite apart from the cross contamination (and that went both ways), it just showed a lack of sense. ]

You know we have labs for this sort of thing? [ Inadvertantly, she rubbed the tips of her fingers against the squirming bulges in her palms. ] I assume you won't fuss if I try to take you to one of those.

[ Of course, he probably would. People were fussy, especially when they were trying to cut poison pods off of their body in a communal zone. ]

[ Sanson looks down for a moment. ]

I was not aware of the existence of one. My apologies.

[ It's still a bit hard navigating this place when he's only been to Chaldea for less than a week. What she said made perfect sense, and as a surgeon he can understand it perfectly well. ]

Show me the way, lady.

[ Well, colour her surprised. She didn't show it, of course, instead choosing to give him a flat stare at being called 'lady' before turning and heading off in that direction. Her pace was a brisk walk, so if he was hoping to follow her there, then he'd need to be a little speedy too.

Valentine flexed her fingers as she walked. It stretched her palms, allowing her to feel how her irritating new additions felt. How disgusting.
]

The base isn't big, [ she said, and by her mildly sarcastic tone, it could be taking as rebuking. ] You'll be able to find things for yourself soon enough.

I will.

[ That's all he says, picking up his tools and following after her. He keeps his arms mostly still - uncovered, his trenchcoat's sleeves rolled up to reveal pale skin (even more so for a Servant). ]

We can use this place freely, yes?

[ The Assassin looks around while they walk, trying to commit what he's seen to memory. ]

[ Even with her back turned to him she was watching him. That was to say, her body was tensed for action, flight or fight. Not relaxed. She didn't know if he could or would do any harm, but she didn't get to where she was by being completely at ease around a stranger. Especially one who was willing to cut out growths from himself. That wasn't the action of a listless man.

Still, she kept going, only looking back at him when he spoke.
]

If you can use it properly, then yes. It's open for use.

[ It wasn't like URSULA was picky with who she allowed in the labs. Or in the base at all, in Valentine's personal opinion. ]

[personal profile] lamortespoir 2016-05-01 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's not difficult to read Valentine's tension, what with his years of human observation. But he doesn't comment on it, because it's all too reasonable, and that he's seen it many times in other Servants. ]

Thank you.

[ It's meant as a response to the information, more than anything else. When they arrive, he spends a bit of time looking around the whole place, adamant on not touching anything. ]

Have you used this place before?
inject: (somebody's got to do it)

[personal profile] inject 2016-05-04 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Once or twice.

[ Which meant she was rarely out of it in her spare time, of course. She was here to find out more ways to combat the Skullgirl and her Masters. That sort of information wasn't going to come out of a teacup in the communal areas.

Her mutations pulsed in her palms. Having someone with that much warm blood in them nearby... well, it wasn't particularly easy to ignore. She could, though. She'd ignored worse.
]

Clean up when you're done and dispose of all sharps and contaminated tools in these places. [ She pointed them out to him. ] I'm interested in seeing how you go about this.

[ If anything, Sanson won't die unless completely obliterated. Servants can take much larger hits. ]

Thank you.

[ Aware that he's being scrutinized, he goes about his business carefully. First is inspecting the area around him, finding a good seat, laying out his tools and noting where he can find more/where to throw them. Then, he sits down - if there's a light, he'll move it over so he can see better. It's easier to operate on himself than someone else, because his awareness of his own body is much better than that of the others.

So. Gloves on, standard surgical procedures, properly ascertaining the limits of the parasitical growth before he begins cutting. He has little need for a sedative, if only because he's able to control it very well. His underlying flesh looks human, blood and all - but after he extracts the sac and places it in a biohazard bag, he's faced with a very simple problem.

He doesn't have anything to close the wound with, save for using his skills to accelerate his healing. So that's what he does, holding onto his hand and willing his wound to close. ]

[ His methods were more... archaic than she would have done herself, but far from poor. Not everyone had access to the labs and the information she had, after all. And anyway, sometimes the basics were the best, especially when dealing with something new.

Of course, while that was interesting, his self-healing was really quite fascinating. Not quite to the same degree of Nadia Fortune, but interesting. Better than hers.

She watched with a keenly avid eye.
]

A useful skill. Especially for a doctor.
lamortespoir: (03)

[personal profile] lamortespoir 2016-05-04 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Given that he was from the eighteenth century, archaic was a given. Even if Servants were summoned with the knowledge that enabled them to survive in the age that they were in, his best skills are still of the past. By applying some magic to augment his Medical Techniques skill, it's possible to accelerate healing to visible extents.

Given the amount of ambient mana here, though, it's not likely that he can use it without stopping. ]

Yes. I intend to put it to use.

[ There are plenty of people here who need watching over. ]

[ Seeing that he wasn't about to lift the bag, Valentine did just that. She didn't dump it, however - there were things a person could do with this toxin. She wanted to see if it was at all changed by having come from someone who wasn't the natural creature that produced it.

Her little additions were whipping into a frenzy at the smell and sight of the blood, even as he was closing the wound. She grit her teeth and simply moved the bag to another area until they calmed down. Disgusting.
]

[personal profile] lamortespoir 2016-05-05 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's a little surprised by how she's cleaning up for him, but then it becomes evident that maybe she wants to keep the toxins for other usage. Research, maybe - or something else altogether.

It doesn't change the fact that she does have growths on her own hand, though. ]

If you prefer, I can remove the ones on your hands.

[ With a grimace, Valentine clenched her fists. The sucking tentacles bulged against the restraint for a moment, but eventually abated. The grin she gave Sanson was not a happy one. ]

Oh, I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself.
lamortespoir: (03)

[personal profile] lamortespoir 2016-05-06 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ Sanson just tilts his head slightly. An attempt at fulfiling his civic duty has been done, so no offense is taken. ]

Good luck.

[personal profile] inject 2016-05-06 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
And to you.

[ Thus under control, she picked up the bag and put it into designated hazard storage. She'd extract the venom and check on the rest later, when her palms were about to go wild with the blood. ]

Do keep me informed if they grow back or your healing can't keep up with it, will you?

[ She didn't even turn around to see if he was still there. For all she knew (or cared) he'd have left. ]
lamortespoir: (03)

[personal profile] lamortespoir 2016-05-06 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I will. And likewise, with yours.

[ He's just going to putter around and check out the lab. It's enough to say that they won't forget each other for a very long time. ]
