anyway!!! dave is not exactly subtle about caring about people when he cares about them so it's pretty obvious he cares about karkat? he's shit at telling him about things because 1) he loves karkat but he's shit at keeping secrets and 2) he's terrible at telling anyone anything...he's finally telling rose shit and actually can't get away with not telling dirk mostly since dirk reads him a bit too well for that but. they definitely do not discuss everything they should like the whole relationship public thing though as dave pointed out to rose somewhere he knows karkat would go public if he wanted but he doesn't want to go public just because...he wants to...he's just like "well it'd be nice if he wanted to date me publicly but he doesn't so it's not really a thing that can be meddled with, DON'T MEDDLE WITH IT, ROSE" rose: proceeds to fucking meddle. there are a lot of things he should probably Tell karkat like he felt something weird!! the other day!!! that might have been jealousy but obviously the answer is to never talk about it at all ever, full stop?
but issues aside karkat rly does make him happy? he likes to talk to him (about. certain things, some things he avoids but he does tell karkat a lot more of his own free will than he would with like, a lot of other people? even john included) and while he's a lot more likely than karkat to smile and laugh with people that isn't always 100% genuine but when he's around karkat it's usually genuine. he missed karkat every day he was gone and also every day until he actually got here and counted...all the seconds...like a lame loser...........he probably collects random rocks and shit to show karkat and files away anecdotes to tell him a lot? also like
he really believes in karkat...he thinks karkat is 100% a better leader than dave would be (dave hates leading lmao) and occasionally will say things of that nature though he has no idea how to actually genuinely Help in that respect beyond just believing in karkat? he also does believe he could handle himself in a fight and wasn't that worried about him in the endgame of homestuck except beyond the part where he was like, worried about everyone. but he trusted karkat to handle himself. he does make fun of him a lot but it's never that serious - he believes in the people he loves a l o t and karkat does get the benefit of that even if he probably wouldn't believe the extent to which dave believes in and supports him.
also he is kinda bad at accepting that people do care about him so while he does know karkat does he always kind of goes well someday he might find that quadrant he isn't filling and want more or something but it's lowkey and he's like, That's Life since mainly he'd want karkat to be happy before wanting him to be happy with dave. the happiest karkat is the best karkat? idk

also karkat does aggravate him sometimes but less than in the other timeline when he was trying to force dave into a quadrant clusterfuck with terezi (and even in that timeline he eventually annoyed him less when he STOPPED THAT...dave hates quadrants...)
