A1: Go Fish
You! Yes, you! Your friendly neighbourhood AI has a task she would like to encourage YOU to do! After all, you can’t forget the most important fact: you’re here to make the planet habitable. Which means cataloguing, capturing and studying potential threats to anyone’s life. That includes a swarm of Stalkers that have been hanging around the waters awfully near the base, which presents a perfect research opportunity! At least, URSULA seems to think so.

Don’t go in willy-nilly waving your knife around, though. URSULA doesn’t want you to bring in tonight’s Sashimi Surprise™, she wants you to bring in a Stalker that’s still kicking. Which means you have to capture a live one. So hold back your crazy power or trigger-happy instincts!

How will you take one in alive without ending up dead yourself? You could go in the brute-force way, slamming its jaws shut and bagging it, though it’s pretty strong itself… or you could be a bit more cunning, taming it with bait or giving it shiny metal salvage to play with before luring it into a tank to bring it into the base. You might want to get a helping hand with this task, since it’s not exactly an easy one-man job.

A2: Go With Fish
So, now you’ve got a live and very disgruntled Stalker on your hands! Hopefully, said hands don’t have to be amputated (it’s okay if they have to though, URSULA will fix it. Try not to watch the nanites go). What do you do with it? You could keep it as a pet and observe its growth! You could dissect it and study its anatomy! Or you could… eat it. (After going through all the effort to bring it in alive?!)

B: The Abysmal Sea
You’re stranded.

One of the planet’s troublesome signal-interfering pulses has just made your communication devices 100% nonfunctional. No matter how you try to call URSULA for help, she isn’t able to respond. The database strapped to your wrist is just a useless chunk of metal now, leaving you without a useful library of knowledge to survive off. If you were driving any underwater vehicle prior to this point, it’s broken down. And unless you’re a mechanic, it’ll be pretty hard to get it jumpstarted again.

Don’t fret! The communication systems always come online eventually, so if you stay put, it’ll boot back up and give you directions straight back to base so you can finally get home. But can you really afford to stay put? The sunlight’s slowly streaming out of the sky, leaving the waters darker and darker with each passing second. Soon, you won’t be able to see five feet in front of you, and the only warning you’ll get of any approaching threat is through sound, if they even make any.

You have a few choices: take a daring risk and try swimming back to base, but on the off-chance you don’t remember the directions correctly from before you were cut off, you’re going to get even more lost, in the darkness of the night no less. Or, you could huddle in, with any friends if they were unfortunate enough to be with you, and start focusing on getting warm. Because spending the night out here in the vast oceans with the entire world against you is becoming a very, very real possibility.

C: It’s dangerous to go alone. Take them!
URSULA’s technology is breathtaking. With enough materials, she could make practically anything: weapons, vehicles, all those human comforts and entertainments she forgot to build... or perhaps she could expand the base to give everyone even more leg room. But there’s a catch: you need to get those materials to her in the first place, and scavenging can be a monumental task.

The planet Iniidae has a plethora of materials to provide, but you’ve got to go find them first. Some are easy enough to get, by plucking off the ground or breaking a rock. But some are a bit more challenging, such as Crash Powder, seeing that the Crash defending it will literally explode in your face if you get too close. And then there’s materials such as Blood Oil, only harvestable within the Blood Kelp Caves several hundred meters underwater in the pitch-black darkness… remember, you have to gather resources with your two bare hands. No such thing as driving around and conveniently collecting them within the somewhat-relative safety of an armored vehicle.

Since it’s so dangerous to go alone, URSULA will encourage you all to leave the base in pairs or groups if you’re going to try collecting some of the more precarious materials to harvest. She has heard that most lifeforms find being reconstituted from nanites traumatic, so try not to die in front of each other!

D: Hide and Seek Help
URSULA knows that everyone needs downtime, and no one can go salvaging or gathering specimens all the time. So what do you do for fun on an alien ocean planet when the AI who made your base forgot to make any kind of entertainment room?

Why, play hide-and-seek, of course! There’s a lot of places to hide away from others, and it’s challenging to find anyone. (Sometimes, too challenging to find them… ever… but that’s not the point.) The area around the base and submarine is relatively safe, so anyone can hide away in a coral structure or a cave, and telepathy makes it easy to taunt your seekers without revealing where you are.

Of course, you may encounter a Bone Shark or even a stray Stalker, and you won’t have time to get away or even scream as it attacks you, but hey. What other way to make hide-and-seek more thrilling than to turn it into hide-and-hope-you-get-found-as-you-shout-for-help-to-anyone-who-can-hear-your-telepathy?

E: Toilet Humor
Really, it was bound to happen eventually. Someone's in the bathroom observatory, doing their 'business', and someone is trying very hard to catch a fish for dinner outside. Your eyes meet. Someone has literally been caught with their pants down.

And in that moment your telepathy goes a little wonky, because it's good to have open communication about this incident.

F: The Caverns of Dream
The ocean calls you. Of course, it's much easier to dismiss it as nightmares. You'll probably think that's all it is after you have them. Flashes of screaming sea creatures writhing in agony, pleading for help, but these creatures can't ask for help, can they? Something huge, beyond the scope of imagination, moves in the ocean of your dreams and calls out to you to go deeper into the darkness. It pleads and begs but not with a voice you can hear or words you can understand.

You wake up in a sweat with the unrelenting desire to take a swim, even though it's late and everyone is asleep. Or maybe someone else just had the same nightmare as you? Are you willing to take a swim and try to understand the dream?

[Zoro knows not to let Devil Fruit users go anywhere near the sea without a buddy. Even if the effect is lessened, it's not nothing. Besides, he's armed! What could go wrong?]

I'd rather just cut it and get this over with.

[He swears, he can hold back his strength! He can knock it out, he'll use the flat of his blades! C'mon, Ace, please?]

Ha! Why not? [ ace shrugs, a strange sluggish motion in the water, already flicking at the metal so the light catches the eye of one of their marks in the school of fish in the bay. the little darting circle of light piques the interest of more than one almost instantly, a couple breaking away from the group to investigate.

URSULA mentioned that she wanted one alive for studying, but if they brought back more than one it could be food too (assuming she didn't want that many) so... either way, win-win. ]
Whatever get us that fish, right? Just a couple of metres and they're all yours.

[Excellent use of bait there, Ace]

Heh! Yeah, I bet the ol' Fire Fist isn't much use out here, is it?

[A shame, because he does so enjoy watching that move in action. Oh well. There's so much life around them it's hard to know which ones exactly are the ones they're supposed to bring back, but here come at least two, maybe three, straight for them. Zoro gently slides two blades out, letting the light catch them as well, and then considers what kind of move he'll need to take those bastards down.]

Not by a stretch. If I find a way to keep a flame going in water, though, I'll let you know. [ now that they've gotten the attention of those stalkers it's ace's cue to get out of the way, because he's not about to risk anything happening to his suit - and by extension, his own person; he's dry now within the confines of that waterproof material and he'd like to keep it that way. ]

Think these things taste good? [ because he sure is hungry. ]
yourotherleft: (on the attack)

I saw nothing ;3

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Only one way to find out...

[he's right there with you, Ace, and bagging enough meat for the colony is never a bad thing. They're close enough, now, that he has a better read on their size and strength and knows what to do.

He kicks off with the ease of a fishman, swimming straight for the stalkers, only to whirl around halfway there and curl his arms over his head. With only two swords at hand, the 72-Pound Cannon is enough to daze the three in front, sending them sort of swirling away with the spiraling momentum. There, that should leave at least one alive, but the other two? Zoro's swimming after them, eager to get close enough to kill.

Just when he's about to cut one, the other shakes itself alert and turns toward him, opening its massive jaws to try and take a nice big bite out of Zoro from behind.

[ if whistling were possible underwater he would; since it isn't, though, ace'd have to settle for a quiet appreciation of the skill his brother's first mate possessed, to move so easily even if they aren't on land.

as soon as one's stunned ace cuts through the water after the thing while it drifts further away from the other two, unraveling a length of twine from his belt and knotting it around the fish's long maw with practised efficiency once he reaches it. the one that creeps up behind the samurai doesn't go unnoticed, but - ]

On your six, Zoro. [ ace calls, alert but without urgency; he's pretty sure the guy is perfectly capable of dealing with it, after all. ]

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-15 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
[relying on haki so much means Zoro occasionally forgets to do the smart thing like watch his back. Ace's alert makes him glance over his shoulder just in time, he manages to kick off from the other one and dodge just as the long jaw snaps the water where he was a moment ago]

Shit! Shit...oh hell no you don't...

[Enjoy his usual stream of mental cursing while he rights himself and swims around the stalker, trying to get into position to stab it without obliterating it. It's no good bringing a carcass back if it doesn't have any meat left on it...]
meramera: (03)

[personal profile] meramera 2016-02-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ for all of zoro's swearing ace has definitely heard more colourful things in his life, and it gets a laugh from the freckled pirate as he swims back over to join the swordsman, his own catch firmly secured. ] Y'could just stun them all, really. There's an aquarium back at base, isn't there?
yourotherleft: (grah)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess...

[it might be faster, given how this stalker is really not interested in being lunch today. It whips around and comes after him again - or maybe after the flashes of light off his swords - so Zoro throws another flying slash at it from this distance. The water slows down those moves a little, but it's still got enough power to knock it senseless, crashing right into its jaw and knocking a few teeth loose.]

What'd you tie that one up with? Got more of it?
meramera: (ᴡᴀʏ ᴅᴏᴡɴ ᴅᴇᴇᴘ ᴡʜᴇʀᴇ ᴛʜᴇ)

[personal profile] meramera 2016-02-16 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ahead of ya. Here. [ there's still some left over from wrangling the first stalker - with some luck it'd stay concussed and well-behaved while they round up the rest of its curious brethren.

with the knife at his hip he cuts free another length of rope, handing it to zoro while glancing around for the last of the three -- only to find that it's somehow gone missing in the tussle. ]
Damn. Think we lost one.
yourotherleft: (blah blah blah)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-16 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[He takes the rope and lashes the jaw of the second one, and then looks around at Ace's warning]

Hm? Shit. Keep an eye out for it, don't want it coming back around to make us a snack.]

[and by eye he means haki, but geez, so many fish around, all the life signs are confusing. Hopefully they'll sense the last stalker before it can sneak up on them through the shoals of smaller fish.]
meramera: (ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴀᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏɴᴅᴇʀғᴜʟ ᴍᴇss ᴛʜᴀᴛ)

[personal profile] meramera 2016-02-16 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That thing's supposed to be my lunch; not the other way around. [ now that they're more or less done with their task ace is struck by a faint sensation of the enervation creeping into his bones; he's got to test things out, one of these days - get a good handle on the limit he's faced with in the water in case of any emergencies - but now just isn't the time.

despite his condition however the pirate still finds it in himself to stay alert as can be; in his peripheral vision two schools of bright, silvery fish swerve abruptly in opposite directions, and ace jerks a thumb that way. ]

I'll hang on to the one you're holding - give it here. We've got company.

[ the fauna here's still too diverse for ace to accurately recall all the details of those they'd just encountered, but the long snout and vicious teeth are recognisable enough. whether or not this is the same stalker zoro initially left stunned is debatable; what's for sure is the speed at which it slices through the water, leaving them with precious few seconds for retaliation. ]
yourotherleft: (santoryu)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-16 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
All yours. Got it.

[With a kick, Zoro moves close enough to hand off the rope to Ace and then kicks away, pulling his swords again in order to face the threat coming at them. It's fast, though, fast enough that he has to brace himself first, crossing the two blades over one another into a firm block that the stalker hits nose-first, snapping at him. It pushes him back through the water a short distance, and then lets him go as it realizes it hasn't bitten down on anything. While it's circling to come back, Zoro does the dumb thing and pulls the breathing apparatus away from his mouth so he can carry the third sword in it instead. He shouldn't need more than a few seconds of holding his breath, right?

The stalker comes back around for another pass, and this time is met with a flurry of underwater swings, as Zoro kicks right through its path with Crossing the Sixth Paths. Blood clouds the water as he slashes the beast to ribbons.
]

Get moving! That's gonna attract sharks - or whatever passes for sharks around here.
meramera: (ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ sᴛʀᴀɴɢᴇsᴛ ᴅʀᴇᴀᴍs)

[personal profile] meramera 2016-02-17 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh huh; I sure as hell don't want to be around here when those show up. Not today, at any rate. [ while ace's general lack of combat capability in the water is doubtlessly frustrating he still isn't entirely useless; if they successfully haul both fish back to base they'd have both a live specimen and a (hopefully delicious) dinner - then again, he's hungry enough that anything would arguably be pretty good by this point.

giving the swordsman and the incoming stalker a wide berth the dark-haired pirate watches zoro reduce the aggressive fish to little more than narrow shreds of bone and entrails, then turns to head in the direction of the base lest they run the risk of bumping into anything further up in the food chain. he definitely does want to find out what else it is that lurks out there, but again - time and place, and this situation affords them neither. ]
This way.

[ hopefully you're following, zoro, because finding someone lost out here is going to be a bitch. ]
yourotherleft: (contemplating)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2016-02-17 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[It takes him a minute to right himself and figure out where Ace is, but then Zoro sheathes his swords, sticks the air thingy back into his mouth, and follows at a distance. As long as he's got his eye on those tied-up stalkers he shouldn't wander off.]
